David Ivon Gower: He made his debut in Test cricket in 1978, scoring a boundary from his first ball, bowled by Pakistan's Liaqat Ali and became, by the time of his retirement, the leading scorer in English history. The Ashes series of 1985 was a highlight of his career, with his own batting including three scores in excess of 150. Gower occasionally opened the innings, but was mainly a middle-order batsman.

Richard Hall Gower: was an English mariner, empirical philosopher, nautical inventor, entrepreneur, and humanitarian.When he returned to England after his first three year voyage, he studied navigation at Edmonton and, on rejoining ship, was dubbed “the young philosopher”. Ever inventive, he once fitted a canvas speaking tube from the main top to the deck, installing it overnight to surprise and please his captain. To his bitter dismay, his captain had it removed instantly saying he was sure the topmen would “use it for an improper purpose”. Gower rose to chief mate of the Essex and qualified as a captain. He returned to shore in 1783 to teach at Edmonton and to publish his Practical Guide that eventually went into at least three editions.

George Gower: was an English portrait painter who became Serjeant Painter to Queen Elizabeth I in 1581.Gower painted a self-portrait in 1579 (right) that shows his coat of arms and his artist's tools of his trade. An allegorical device shows a balance with an artist's dividers outweighing the family coat of arms, "a startling claim in England where a painter was still viewed as little more than an artisan."[1]Gower was appointed to the position of Serjeant Painter to Queen Elizabeth in 1581.[1] This allowed him to paint most of England’s aristocracy. The post also made him responsible for painted decoration at the royal residences, and on coaches and furniture. Among his works were a fountain (now destroyed) and the astronomical clock, both at Hampton Court Palace. He also inspected portraits of the Queen by other artists prior to their official release.
