Semyon Konstantinovich Timoshenk: was a Soviet military commander and senior professional officer of the Red Army at the beginning of the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. Timoshenko was born into a peasant family at Furmanca (Furmanka), in Southern Bessarabia, Odessa region (now part of Ukraine). In 1915, he was drafted into the army of the Russian Empire and served as a cavalryman on the western front.
