Nadia Murad Human Rights Activist

Date 2016-12-07

Nadia Murad has been through it all, from losing her home to being kidnapped, raped and tortured. While she has lost many people close to her, seeing her mother murdered and the men in her family taken to be murdered in mass killings, she has not stopped fighting back against the genocide happening in her homeland – Yezidi.

Murad is speaking out against the horrors being inflicted by ISIS, demanding the release of over three thousand females that are being held in bondage. While the borders are being closed in Europe and the United States, refugees are looking to Nadia for help.

She is a stark reminder of the facts that led to the rise of ISIS, from the war that was started by America in Iraq to the many weapons that were left behind. Not to mention the fact that America waited way too long to help prevent many mass killings of the Yezidi people.

Murad, 23, is risking her life to raise awareness, to bring help to those who have been enslaved. She has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize and has become the first “Goodwill Ambassador for the Dignity of Survivors of Human Trafficking of the United Nations”. Recently, Murad has been named one of the top 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine.

The feminine name Nadia is a variant transcription of Nadiyya, which means “delicate, tender, or moist” or “the calling” in Arabic. There are many notable people with the name, like Nadia Bjorlin the American actress.
