The feminine name Mary is the English version of Maria, which is the Latin form of the Greek names Maria and Mariam from the New Testament. Both of these names are taken from the Hebrew name Miryam that was from the Old Testament and borne by the sister of Moses. However, the name is more likely to be an Egyptian name that was derived from the element mr “love” or mry “beloved”.
