Way back in the 1930s, she attempted to fly from England to Australia but failed. She didn’t give up, and on her third try, she made the record-breaking flight in 1934.
She was born in Rotorua, Batten, where she made many flights that broke records around world, which made her very popular. However, she started off as a gifted pianist, then at 18-years-old decide to be a pilot.
Batten successfully did a solo trip in May of 1934, that took her 14 days and 22 hours and went from England to Australia in a plane called the Gipsy Moth. In fact, she beat the record of English pilot Amy Johnson by four days. Then she was awarded the Harmon Trophy not once, but three times for this achievement and other flights.
Jean Batten was born into the name Jane, which is a medieval English version of Jehanne that was an Old French feminine form of Iohannes or John. The English name John is ultimately derived from the Hebrew name Yochanan, which means “Yahweh is gracious”. The name Jean is also a variant of Jane and became common in Scotland and England in the Middle ages. However, over time the name became uncommon in England. It was then reintroduced back into the English-speaking world in the 19th century by Scotland.
