The father of the “Satanic Panic,” Jack Chick has passed away at the age of 92-years-old. The creator and founder of the bigoted, yet weirdly enjoyable, evangelical Comic books will be missed by many.
Chick Production announced the sad news about Chick, that he passed away in his sleep Sunday night. The news was also posted on Facebook via Christian Nightmares.
For anyone who has been horrified or fascinated, or even delighted by his strange comics, it was tragic news. He was the creator of a series called “Chick Tracts,” that was a long-running evangelical mini comic that was designed to bring people closer to Jesus through the use of bizarre, insane, and campy storylines and thought provoking art.
Chick, himself was a bit of a mystery, as he did few interviews in his long career. In fact, the most complete biography is from his website, that talks about everything from his early years as a bad boy to the time his wife save him and changed his life.
The masculine name Jack is derived from Jackin (or Jankin) that was a medieval diminutive of John. The name John is derived from the Hebrew name Yochanan that means “Yahweh is gracious”.
The name Jack is thought of as an independent name. It was very common during the Middle Ages, where it became a slang word with the meaning “man”. The name was frequently used in many nursery rhymes and fairy tales, like “Little Jack Horner,” “Jack and the Beanstalk,” and “Jack Sprat”.
