In 2016, he plans on directing for the very first time, making an adaptation of the novel “Yardi” by Victor Headley. On top of his acting and directing, he is a DJ and a hip-hop soul musician.
Elba has been nominated many times for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor and has won once. He was also been nominated a bunch of times for a Primetime Emmy Award. Elba was recently named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine.
Idris Elba is British, however, his father is from Sierra Leone and his mother is from Ghana, which means he received an African name. The masculine name Idrissa is African in origin and means “immortal”. Although the name was intended to be a beautiful tribute to the heritage of his parents, Idrissa’s schoolmates found it to be a bit too feminine and he was teased because of it. Eventually, Idrissa removed the -sa at the end of his name to make it more masculine.
