Felix Kjellberg – Video Game Pioneer

YouTube has ushered in a new era of passive gaming, where people like Felix Kjellberg a. k. a. PewDiePie and others, do commentary on a video games that have already been played. It may seem a bit weird to those who are from an older generation, but PewDiePie videos are a big hit with the younger generations.

The videos are comprised of someone, usually around 20-years-old, playing a video game, with another person in a small box on the screen doing a “play-by-play” or making funny jokes every few seconds. With over 43 million subscribers, Kjellberg is one of the most-watched people on YouTube.

PewDiePie videos are a new form of entertainment, and Kjellberg knows how to be funny, charming and careful with his comments. While some might see this as wasted time watching video games being played, others will enjoy the new art form.

The fan base for the PewDiePie videos is so large that Felix refers to it as the “Bro Army,” and individual subscribers are referred to as “bros”. Using his massive fan base, he has raised a bunch of money for different charities. Not to mention the fact, that every single game he reviews becomes more popular. Kjellberg was recently named one of “the world’s 100 most influential people” by Time magazine in 2016.

The masculine name Felix is taken from the Roman cognomen that means “successful” or “lucky” in Latin. Due to the fact that the name has a favorable meaning, it is very popular with early Christians, being given to many popes and saints.
