Eldrick Tont "Tiger" Woods was given his name by his mother, who started it with an "E" for Earl and ended it with a "K" for Kultida. He was given the nickname "Tiger" to honor a friend of his father – Col. Vuong Dang Phong.
The name Eldrick is a variant of Eldric, which is a Medieval version of both the Old English names like Ælfric, Æðelric or Elric. These name were taken from the Old English with elements that meant "noble" or "power or rule".
