One of the most recognizable models in the world, Winnie Harlow "Chantelle Brown-Young" has a rare skin condition called vitiligo, which causes her skin to have no pigmentation in different parts all over her body. She was discovered by the supermodel, Tyra Banks, who helped her succeed in the fashion industry with her unique look.
It was not an easy road to becoming a model, as she was bullied relentlessly as a child, called a “zebra” or “cow”, and worse throughout the years. She changed schools many times and even ended up dropping out of high school, she even contemplated suicide.
However, America’s Next Top Model host, Tyra Banks saw Harlow's beautiful look on Instagram and invited her to be a part of the show. She was eliminated during the second week of the finals, but there was a second competition, the “comeback series” where she managed to win over the fans and returned to the show. She was then eliminated in the 13th episode and ended up sixth overall.
She has done many public speaking events, from her work with Dove and the self-esteem project to her TED presentation. She was even awarded the “Role Model” Award at the 2015 Portuguese GQ Men of the Year event. In 2016, BBC recognized Harlow as one of 100 most influential women in the world.
