Becci Wain – UK Healthcare Assistant

As someone who used to self-harm, Becci Wain is now turning things around and is working with a skin camouflage practitioner to get back her confidence. Wain states that most people take one look at her scars and assume that she is weak, however, to her they show that she is strong and has overcome her problems.

At the age of 22-years-old, Wain is now speaking up after she was humiliated at a Tesco. She was attempting to purchase a bottle of champagne for a birthday present and a worker refused to sell it to her after seeing her scars. Wain has been seeing a therapist for a half a year now and has stopped self-harming, and wants to make sure that something like this doesn’t happen to another person.

Now a healthcare assistant, Wain is concerned that more vulnerable people might turn to further self-harm if they were humiliated in the same fashion. Self-harm is an addictive behavior and when pointed out can trigger more issues.

Wain wants to increase awareness, training, and sensitivity in the workplace. BBC named her one of the 100 most influential women in the world for her actions in 2016.

The feminine name Becci is a diminutive of Rebecca, which is from the Hebrew name Rivqah that is taken from an unattested root that most likely means “tie, join, or snare”. The name became popular as a Christian name after the Protestant Reformation, and in the 17th century was common with the Puritans.
