The amazing Polish film director, Andrzej Wajda, made it through two terrible dictatorships to be a voice for humanity. He spoke of courage, hope and truth even when Europe was struggling during the 20th century.
As a pole, in this terrible time period, Wajda experienced the worst of it. In fact, his father was killed by Stalin’s army in 1940, along with many other Polish officer prisoners. Then during the second world war, many Jews died. Andrzej has lived most of his life in a dictatorship and has seen the consequences.
His death is a reminder of the many humane values he held so close and tried to illuminate and embody through his art. Wajda’s work does not highlight the tragedies that he suffered through, on the contrary, they show love, freedom and responsibility.
His most famous films show different places that have gone through some sort of tragedy, like the bomb site at rosebay willowherb, turning into something better. Andrzej takes a stand for moral and artistic integrity, with resilience and courage, just like Europe did when it was threatened.
