The R&B singer, Sevyn Streeter had a wardrobe problem that resulted in her not singing the National Anthem. It was all because she decided to wear a jersey that had a simple, yet very powerful statement - “We Matter”.
According to the 76ers, Streeter had signed a contract that had a “Janet Jackson clause,” which allowed the staff to inspect her costume before the show. The message was not one that the 76ers wanted to display during the National Anthem and asked Streeter to put on a jacket, and even offered her a team jersey to wear for the performance.
The 76ers staff even explained that they were willing to take pictures of her afterward in the jersey that had the bold statement. However, Streeter refused to cover up and it was the reason she didn’t perform that night.
Streeter hoped to use the platform to create positive change and extend upon the dialogue that was started by the 76ers. Recently, the 76ers had honored a couple of people that were victims of gun violence, as well as, as local organization called “Unity in the Community”.
The rapper goes by the stage name Sevyn Streeter, but her real name is Amber Denise Streeter. The name Amber is taken from the English word amber that represents a gemstone.
