was a Japanese mathematician. He was born in Yedo in the province Harima under the name of Koyama Naoaki. In his early years he served in a buddhist temple in Yedo under the name Zojoji. When he left the temple he changed his name for unknown reasons to Wada Nei and worked under the patronage of lord Tsuchimikado the calendar maker of the court of Mikado. There he started to take up mathematics and was a student of Kusaka Sei. Kusaka Sei himself was a student of Ajima Chokuyen. Wada Nei extended Ajima Chokuyen's development of an integral calculus within the Enri (??, "circle principle") context. He worked on the computation of minimum and maximum values (roughly by equating the first derivative to 0) and gave reasoning and insight to the computation method that was given without explanation by Seki Takakazu about 100 years earlier. He was also the first Japanese mathematician to study roulettes.
was a Japanese adventurer and entrepreneur who achieved fame for his exploits in turn-of-the-20th-century Alaska and Yukon Territory.According to his own account, Wada was born on February 12, 1872,[1] in Ehime Prefecture, Japan, to wealthy parents. Wada said that he arrived in San Francisco in late 1891, and that his purpose of traveling to the United States was to attend Yale University.[2]Researcher Yuji Tani provides an alternative story. According to Tani, Wada was born in Ehime Prefecture in 1874 or 1875. He was the second son of a former samurai fallen on hard times, and his father died when Jujiro was four. Subsequently, Jujiro and his mother went to live with his mother's relatives. In 1888, when he was 13 or 14 years of age (by Japanese counting, which would mean 12 or 13 by American), Jujiro went to work in a relative's paper factory. At the factory, he heard tales about the fabulous wealth of America.[3] Consequently, in March 1890, he took a steamship to San Francisco.[4
