Tsuru Aoki: was a popular Japanese-American stage and screen actress whose career was most prolific during the silent film era of the 1910s through the 1920s. Aoki is possibly the first Asian actress to garner top-billing in American motion pictures.Aoki began her acting career after returning to Los Angeles and performing in stage productions in the city's Japanese Theatre where she was noticed by film producer Thomas Ince who placed the young actress under contract. Aoki made her film debut in the Majestic film studios release The Oath of Tsuru San in 1913 opposite actor William Garwood. Her follow-up film was the 1914 Ince produced O Mimi San

Tsuru Shigeto: Japanese Marxian economist.Tsuru took his Ph.D. at Harvard in 1940, in the company of such fellow graduate students as Paul Samuelson, Alan and Paul Sweezy, and John Kenneth Galbraith. He married into one of Japan's oldest, most prestigious, and most powerful families (his wife's uncle was the Lord Keeper of the Privy Seal). Tsuru worked in the Foreign Ministry as economic advisor to the Economic and Scientific Section of the Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers, and during the Socialist coalition government of 1947-1948 he was Vice Minister of the Economic Stabilization Board (at the age of 35). After the conservative electoral ascendancy he went on to a distinguished academic career, including the presidency of Hitotsubashi University and service as editorial advisor to Asahi Shimbun
