Rao started his professional senior career in 2008 with Chinese Super League club Shaanxi Chanba after he graduated from the clubs youth team. He made his senior debut on April 9, 2008 in a 0-0 away draw with Shenzhen Shangqingyin and was described by Shaanxi manager Cheng Yaodong as being a hot prospect for the future. Despite the strong support from the manager the club would struggle within the 2009 Chinese Super League campaign, Cheng Yaodong would leave the club and Rao saw very little playing time throughout the season. The following season, however saw the new manager Zhu Guanghu decide to move Rao into defense where Rao would quickly establish himself as the clubs first choice full back and while Zhu Guanghu left Rao has remained a vital member within the teams defense.
