Badrinarayan Ramulal Barwale: an Indian farmer and entrepreneur and the founder of Mahyco, the Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Company - one of the first and largest private hybrid seed companies in India. He received the 1998 World Food Prize for his leadership in developing and strengthening the private agricultural sector following India's independence from Britain.Barwale was born into a small agricultural family in Jalna in 1931, while India was still under British control. Shortly after his 17th birthday, the region became part of the independent Indian republic, whose government was faced with the problem of how to feed its people. At that time, most family farms operated on 5 acres (20,000 m2) of land, if not less; incomes were small, debts were high, and yields often failed to suffice even for the household that produced them.
