He was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1966, for his work Muktibodh (Novelette), and its highest award, the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship in 1979 [2].

He hails from the well known Sahu Jain family of Najibabad (Distt. Bijnor, U.P.).He was born on August 15, 1925. His great grandfather Sahu Salekh Chand Jain was a wealthy businessman possessing religious and charitable mind. His grand father was Shri Mussadi Lal. His father Rao Bahadur Jugmundar Das was a leading businessman and landlord in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh who was even honoured by the British. He had his earlier education in Najibabad from where he moved on to study B.Sc. (Industrial Chemistry) at Benaras Hindu University.
