He may have been a pupil of Johann Nicolaus Mempel in Apolda, which is inferred from the common authorship of the Mempell-Preller-Handschrift, a manuscript collection of organ and keyboard works by Johann Sebastian Bach. He studied from 1750 at the University of Jena and in 1753 or 1754 was appointed cantor in Dortmund, where he founded a collegium musicum. He remained there for the rest of his life. His only known composition is a Laudate Dominum.

These became known to George III, king of England, his sovereign, since he was also Elector of Hanover.[1] In 1781 he was introduced to George III and made "many humorous sketches and caricatures" for him.[2] George induced Ramberg to go to London, where he provided support.[1] Ramberg may have been a student of Joshua Reynolds and Francesco Bartolozzi; in November 1781, he studied with Benjamin West at the Royal Academy Schools. Schulze is best known for the discovery that certain silver salts, most notably silver chloride and silver nitrate, darken in the presence of light.
