George Murdoch: was the first mayor of Calgary, Alberta. He was born in Paisley, Scotland, and died in Calgary, Alberta. In the community, Murdoch was involved with the Masonic Lodge and the Orange Order in Canada, literary and history societies, volunteer fire brigade, was one of the founders of Calgary's Presbyterian Church and the first President of the Calgary St. Andrew's Society. Being one the first permanent businessmen in Calgary, he was an active participant in securing the incorporation of Calgary from the government of the North-West Territories in November 1884. On December 4, 1884, he became the first mayor of the Town of Calgary. He held this post until October 21, 1886. Murdoch was disqualified from the 1886 election after an unsubstantiated allegation was made that he had tampered with votes. Murdoch also served as town Councillor from 1889 to 1890 and city Alderman from 1895 to 1896.

He has been a member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario since 1990, and represents the riding of Bruce—Grey—Owen Sound as a Progressive Conservative.Murdoch's first bid to enter the Ontario legislature was unsuccessful. He ran as a Progressive Conservative for the riding of Grey in the 1987 Ontario election, in which the Liberals under David Peterson won a landslide majority. Murdoch lost to Liberal Ron Lipsett by about 2000 votes. The Liberals saw their support base decline during the 1990 election, however, and Murdoch was able to win the seat on his second attempt, defeating New Democrat Peggy Hutchinson by about 2500 votes (Lipsett finished third).

Beamish Murdoch: was a lawyer, historian and political figure in Nova Scotia. He represented Halifax township in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1826 to 1830. Murdoch was defeated by Stephen Wastie Deblois when he ran for reelection in 1830; he was an unsuccessful candidate again in 1836 and 1840. He served as president of the Halifax Temperance Society. In 1841, Murdoch became clerk for the Central Board of Education and, in 1852, was named record for the city of Halifax. Between 1865 and 1867, he published A History of Nova-Scotia, Or Acadie.
