Pierre Berthier: was a French geologist and mining engineer.Pierre Berthier was born in Nemours. After studying at the École Polytechnique, he went to the École des Mines, where he became chief of the laboratory in 1816. In 1821, while working in the village of Les Baux de Provence, in southern France, he discovered the mineral bauxite, named for the place of its discovery. He also discovered the mineral Berthierite, which was named after him. In addition to numerous contributions in minerology and mining, Berthier is also noted for his research into blast furnaces and for the utilization of phosphates by plants.

Louis Alexandre Berthier: marshal of France, Vice-Constable of France beginning in 1808, and Chief of Staff under Napoleon, was born at Versailles to Jean Baptiste Berthier (1721 – 1804) and first wife (married in 1746) Marie Françoise Lhuillier de La Serre. Widowed, his father remarried Françoise Chéron and had a son Alexandre Joseph Berthier (1792 – 1849), married to his cousin Thérèse Léopoldine Berthier (1806 – 1882), and had issue, Viscounts Berthier de Wagram, extinct in 1949.

Jean-Baptiste Berthier: was an officer (Lieutenant-Colonel) in the French Corps of Topographical Engineers during the reigns of Louis XV and Louis XVI. After attracting the attention of marchal de camp Charles Louis Auguste Fouquet, duc de Belle-Isle he was deputed by him to supervise construction of several prominent Paris public buildings, notably those of the ministries of war, navy and foreign affairs in Versailles. In 1758 he was made Director of Military Survey to King Louis XV, a position he retained with Louis XVI for whom he prepared the famous topographic maps of the Royal hunting grounds.[1]

Jacques Berthier: was a French composer of liturgical music, best known for writing much of the music used at Taizé. Berthier was born in Auxerre, Burgundy; both of his parents were musicians - his father Paul was the kapellmeister and organist at the Auxerre Cathedral. Learning first from his parents, Berthier was trained in music at the César Franck School in Paris. While there, he was taught by, among others, Edward Souberbielle and Guy de Lioncourt (whose daughter he married). In 1955 Berthier was first asked to compose music for the Taizé Community
