Anselme Gaëtan Desmarest: was a French zoologist and author. He was the son of Nicolas Desmarest.Desmarest published Histoire Naturelle des Tangaras, des Manakins et des Todiers (1805), Considérations générales sur la classe des crustacés (1825), Mammalogie ou description des espèces des Mammifères. Paris: Veuve Agasse(1820), and Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles (1816-30, with André Marie Constant Duméril).His son Eugène Anselme Sébastien Léon Desmarest (1816-1889)was also a zoologist.

Anselme Payen: was a French chemist known for discovering the enzyme diastase, and the carbohydrate cellulose. At the age of 23, Payen became manager of a borax-refining factory, where he developed a process for synthesizing borax from soda and boric acid. Previously, all borax had been imported from the East Indies exclusively by the Dutch. Payen's new method of synthesizing borax allowed him to sell the mineral at one third the going price, and break the Dutch monopoly.

He served three terms as a Liberal Member of Parliament in the Canadian House of Commons representing the Quebec riding of Berthier.He was elected in the Canadian federal election of 1867, and was re-elected in 1872 and 1874. He resigned his seat in the House of Commons to accept an appointment to the Canadian Senate on 9 February 1875 on the recommendation of Alexander Mackenzie.

Bernard Anselme: was the Minister-President of the Walloon Region of Belgium from May 11, 1988 to January 7, 1992. Between 1969 and 1972, Anselme served as the Special Adviser to the Minister for Community Relations, and from 1972 to 1977 served as an adviser to the President of the Walloon Economic Council, Alfred Delourme. In 1977, Anselme became the Member for Namur, serving in various positions before serving as Wallonia's Secretary of State from 1979 to 1980. In 1985, as a member of Wallonia's regional parliament, Anselme authored a decree establishing Namur as the capital of the Walloon Region. In 1988, Anselme became the Minister-President of the Walloon Region, a position he retained until January 7, 1992. From 1994 to 1999 Anselme served as the Minister for Internal Affairs for the Walloon Region, followed by a few months in the position of Minister for Social Affairs.
