He started his own software company in 1982 and later served as a consultant from 1988 to 1993. He works as a researcher at the People's Liberation Army Academy of Military Sciences, where he completed his doctorate. Among the several books he has written is Grandfather Mao Zedong (Yeye Mao Zedong), published by the National Defence University Press in October 2003. Mao won promotion to the rank of major general in the People's Liberation Army in June 2009, in a controversial move. According to the Changjiang Daily, Mao is now the youngest general in the PLA.

Mao is nicknamed Lady Whirlwind and Lady Kung Fu by her fans. She trained in hapkido, kung fu, tae kwon do, and other forms of martial arts during her film career to prepare for her movie roles. She was paid $100 for her short role in the feature film Enter the Dragon.
