Robert Blair "Paddy" Mayne: was a Northern Irish soldier, solicitor, rugby union international, amateur boxer and polar explorer.Paddy" Mayne was born in the County Down market town of Newtownards, the second youngest of seven children. The Mayne family were prominent landowners, and owned several retail businesses in the town. He was named Robert Blair after a second cousin, who at the time of his birth was a British Army officer serving in World War I. The family home, Mount Pleasant, is situated on the hills above Newtownards.

Here he became interested in photographic processing, and met Hugo van Wadenoyen; a key figure in British photography's break with pictorialism. On graduating in 1951 Mayne contributed pictures to the declining Picture Post, and was an occasional film stills photographer.

Clarice Mayne: was a music hall and variety theatre singer and performer.Early in her career, Mayne often played the "principal girl" in pantomimes for Francis Laidler, among others.[1] She also became a noted music hall performer. Later, she played the "principal boy" roles.[2]Mayne sang in the variety theatre act called "Clarice Mayne and That". Mayne was "This", and Tate, accompanying on the piano, was "That" ("This sings, That Plays!"). They first appeared together at “The Oxford” in 1906 and introduced a number of popular numbers including “I was a Good little girl, ‘till I met You” (1912), and “Put on Your Ta-Ta little Girlie”, both written by Tate. They married in 1912 after the death of Tate's first wife, Lottie Collins. Tate died in 1922, and Mayne married Teddy Knox of Nervo and Knox in 1934.
