He had recently been in the news as the then Chief Election Commissioner, N Gopalaswami, had unilaterally recommended his removal from the election commission on grounds of partisanship. [1]The recommendation had since been rejected by the President of India on March 1, 2009. The constitutional validity of rejection and recommendation were debated. He succeeded N Gopalaswami as the Chief Election Commissioner of India on April 20, 2009.
