Malandra Burrows: an English actress and singer.Even before leaving drama school, Burrows played several roles on television, appearing in The Practice and Fell Tiger, as well as taking two parts in the Channel 4 soap opera Brookside - firstly Lucy Coflins's schoolfriend, Sue, and then Pat Hancock's girlfriend, Lisa Morrisey in 1982.Three months after leaving drama school, she auditioned for the role of Kathy Bates in the popular ITV soap opera Emmerdale (then known as Emmerdale Farm) and got the part. The role has been her most prominent to date. She became one of the programmes longest running characters, remaining in the show from 1985 to 2001 and returning briefly in 2005. Kathy is remembered for being one of the most married characters in the soap and had a reputation for having "the kiss of death" on her men. First husband Jackie Merrick accidentally shot himself in 1989; her second marriage to wheelchair-bound Chris Tate ended in 1995 when he admitted to an affair

Adolf Malan: is a former South African rugby union footballer. He played 159 matches for Northern Transvaal. His usual position was as lock, where he also played for the national team, the Springboks.Malan made his debut for South Africa on August 26, 1989 against a World Invitation team. The match was played at Newlands in Cape Town, and Malan started at lock, with the Springboks winning 20 to 19, by a single point. He played in the subsequent test against the World Invitation, which was won 22 to 16 at Ellis Park.

He played the position of flanker.Malan's sole cap came at the age of 30 on September 17th 1949 against the All Blacks at St George's Park in Port Elizabeth, a game the Springboks went on to win 11-8 to take the series 4-0.It is around this time that Malan made his famous suggestion to Danie Craven to organise a tournament for schoolboys to coincide with the celebrations of the 75th anniversary of the South African Rugby Board, the implementation of which provided the groundwork for the Craven Week schools tournament.

François Stephanus Malan: was a South African politician.Malan was the son of a farmer and was born in Leeuwenjacht, near Paarl, Cape Colony. As his name suggests, he was of Huguenot (French Protestants who fled to South Africa and were assimilated in the Afrikaner population) descent. His brother, Charles W. Malan, also entered politics. Malan was educated at Victoria College, Stellenbosch, the University of the Cape of Good Hope (where he studied science) and Christ's College, Cambridge, graduating from Cambridge in 1894 with an LLB.[1] He returned to Cape Colony in 1895 and was admitted as an advocate. He never practised, however, and later that year became editor of Ons Land, the Cape's leading Dutch language newspaper. He vigorously opposed Cecil Rhodes and the Progressive Party, precipitated the fall of William Philip Schreiner's government in 1902, and opposed Lord Milner. He was sentenced to a year's imprisonment during the South African War.[2]

Wynand Malan: is a liberal Afrikaner South African politician.A lawyer, Malan entered politics in the 1977 South African election when he was elected to the South Africa's all white parliament as the National Party MP for Randburg.A member of the NP's reform wing, he was critical of P.W. Botha for being too timid in his constitutional reforms in the 1980s and was also critical of the state of emergency implemented by Botha. In the 1987 general election, he left the NP[1] and was elected as a representative of the new Independent Party which he co-founded with Denis Worrall. He subsequently helped form the new liberal opposition Democratic Party becoming its co-leader and retaining his parliamentary seat in the 1989 general election by defeating former Ambassador to Canada Glenn Babb who was running for the NP. Malan remained in the DP's leadership until 1993.
