Setsuko Hara     Setsuko Hara       Origin/Culture/Country: Japanese

Setsuko Hara: a famous Japanese actress who appeared in many of Yasujiro Ozu's films, most notably as Noriko in the Noriko Trilogy (Late Spring, Early Summer, and Tokyo Story). She also starred in pictures by Akira Kurosawa, Mikio Naruse and other prominent directors. She is called "the Eternal Virgin" in Japan and is a symbol of Japanese film's golden era of the 1950s. She suddenly quit acting in 1963 (the same year as Ozu's death), and has since led a secluded life in Kamakura, refusing all interviews and refusing to be photographed (making Japanese-cinema scholar Donald Richie refer to Hara as the "Greta Garbo of Japan"). Her final role was Riku, wife of Oishi Yoshio, in a film of Chushingura. She later became the inspiration for the protagonist of the 2001 movie Millennium Actress. [1]

Keiichi Hara: a Japanese director of animated films.What started Hara on his career as an animation creator was visiting an animation film company, as part of his job hunting activities after graduating from Tokyo Designer Gakuin College (TDG). He recklessly left the tour, normally forbidden for visitors, then begged an artistic director to give him a job. A few days later he returned with some continuity he created, as requested. As a result he was introduced to a commercial film studio.

With a doctorate in engineering, he was a professor at the University of Tokyo until 1997, and has held an emeritus position since that time.

Tamiki Hara: was a Japanese author. He was born in Hiroshima in 1905 and died in Tokyo in 1951 when he threw himself in front of an oncoming train. Hara was a survivor of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and this experience, and the memory of his dead wife, became central to his work.Hara's best-known work, Summer Flowers, was published in June, 1947. In this work, Hara describes and relates his experience of the atomic bomb which was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945.
