Susumu Ohno: was an Asian American geneticist and evolutionary biologist, and seminal researcher in the field of molecular evolution.Susumu Ohno was born of Japanese parents in Seoul, Korea, on February 1, 1928. The second of five children, he was the son of the minister of education of the Japanese Viceroyship of Korea. The family returned to Japan after the war in 1945. Later he became a citizen of the United States of America. Susumu Ohno married Midori Aoyama in 1951. They had two sons and one daughter.

Susumu Kuno: a Japanese linguist and author. He is Professor Emeritus of Linguistics at Harvard University, where he received his Ph.D. degree in 1964 and spent his entire career. He received his A.B. and A.M. from Tokyo University where he received a thorough grounding in linguistics under the guidance of Shiro Hattori. His postgraduate research focused on the Dravidian languages. It was through Shigeyuki Kuroda, an early advocate of Chomskyan approaches to language, that Kuno undertook his first studies in transformational grammar. In 1960 he went to Harvard to work on a machine translation project.
