He became minister of Finance in the following administrations: Schermerhorn/Drees (1945-1946), Beel-1 (1946-1948), Drees/Van Schaik (1948-1951) and Drees-2 (1951-1952). In this function, he was largely responsible for the monetary recovery of the country and its currency.

He came, perhaps, from a family of lapsed Huguenots. After an education in 's-Hertogenbosch, he received his training from the Vlissingen rector Van Cruysselenbergen, in whose house he lived. In 1891 he was elected in the House of Representatives (Dutch lower house of parliament) and remained a member till 1922 (except in the period 1905-1908 when he was Minister of the Interior). From July 1918 till April 1921 he was the president of the parliamentary group of the Liberal Union and from April 1921 till July 1922 he served as the first president of the Freedom League parliamentary party.

Pieter Steyn: was Grand Pensionary of Holland from June 18, 1749 to November 5, 1772.He was the son of Johanna Patijn and Adriaan Steyn, burgomaster of Haarlem and studied Law in Leiden between 1724 and 1726. Both his marriages (of 1736 and 1740) were without issue. He was survived by his second wife, Cornelia Schellinger.
