Atzo Nicolaï: is a Dutch politician and was Minister for Government Reform and Kingdom Relations in the third Balkenende cabinet.Nicolaï studied law and political science at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. After his graduation in 1987, he was employed by the ministry of Welfare, Health and Culture. In 1998, he became a member of parliament for the VVD fraction. In 2002, he became Junior Minister for European Affairs in the first Balkenende cabinet, a post he continued in the second Balkenende cabinet.

He was the first president of the Chambre des Comptes, and the fourth member elected to occupy seat 2 of the Académie française in 1788. After giving praise to Louis XVI of France during his reception at the Academy, he was declared an enemy of the people and sentenced to death by guillotine in 1794.
