In Milton Berle: An Autobiography (1975), he explained, "I was scared shitless, even when he went on to tell me that Pauline would save my life. Which is exactly what happened, except that at the crucial moment they threw a bundle of rags instead of me from the train. I bet there are a lot of comedians around today who are sorry about that."

In November 1974 , he was elected senator from Mato Grosso, competing for ARENA, defeating the candidate of the MDB , Vicente Bezerra Neto. On June 29th of 1987 , took the Senate seat, with the resignation of the holder, who was elected governor. In June 1988 , left the PMDB and was a founder of the PSDB .
