He was posthumously pardoned in 2008.Marinus van der Lubbe, was born in Leiden in the province of Zuid-Holland. His parents were divorced and, after his mother died when he was 12, he went to live with his half-sister's family. In his youth Van der Lubbe worked as a bricklayer. He was nicknamed Dempsey after the boxer Jack Dempsey, because of his great strength. At his work, Van der Lubbe came in contact with the labour movement; in 1925, he joined the Dutch Communist Party (CPH).

Marinus Van Der Goes Van Naters: was a Dutch politician. He was born in Nijmegen. He was a member of the Tweede Kamer from 1937 to 1967 and in-parliament chairman of the Social Democratic parties SDAP and its successor the Partij van de Arbeid from 1945 to 1951. From 1940 to 1944 during World War II he was held hostage by the German occupiers in various camps, including Buchenwald concentration camp.
