Gentile Bellini: was an Italian painter. Born in Venice, the son of the painter Jacopo Bellini, he was christened Gentile after Jacopo's master, Gentile da Fabriano.[1] From 1474 he was the official portrait artist for the Doges of Venice.Gentile earliest signed work is The Blessed Lorenzo Giustinian (1445), one of the oldest surviving oil paintings in Venice, (now at the Accademia Museum). During the 1470s Bellini worked on a commission for the Scuola Grande di San Marco, painted in conjunction with his brother, brother, the even better known Giovanni Bellini. From 1474 he was also the official portrait artist for the Doges of Venice,[2] (for example, see image of the Doge Giovanni Mocenigo at right).

His mother died some time before 1380 and his father, Niccolò di Giovanni Massi, retired to a monastery in the same year, where he died in 1385.
