Friedrich Kiel: was a German composer and music teacher. Writing of the chamber music of Friedrich Kiel, the famous scholar and critic Wilhelm Altmann notes that it was Kiel’s extreme modesty which kept him and his exceptional works from receiving the consideration they deserved. After mentioning Brahms and others, Altmann writes, “He produced a number of chamber works, which . . . need fear no comparison.”

Friedrich Ernst Koch: was a German composer, cellist and teacher. He was born in Berlin and studied cello with Robert Hausmann and composition with Woldemar Bargiel at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik. He served as a cellist in the Royal Orchestra of Berlin between 1882 and 1891, after which he accepted a position of music director (Kapellmeister) for the resort town of Baden-Baden. A year later, he returned to Berlin, where he concentrated on composing and teaching, eventually becoming a professor and director of theory at the Musikhochschule where he had studied. Boris Blacher and Paul Kletzki were among his many students.

Friedrich Wilhelm Kücken: was a German composer and conductor. He learned piano as a child and played chamber music in his youth. After moving to Schwerin he studied under Friedrich Lührss, Paul Aron, and George Rettberg. He composed the song Ach, wie wärs möglich dann, which became quite popular and resulted in his being chosen for the court of Grand Duke Paul Friedrich von Mecklenburg-Schwerin.[1] He furthered his studies in 1832 with Joseph Birnbach in Berlin and later with Sechter in Vienna (1941-43), as well as with Halevy and Marco Bordogni in Paris. He held a conducting position at a Stuttgart court theater from 1851 to 1861. He died in Schwerin.

Friedrich August Kummer: was a violoncellist, pedagogue, and composer. In 1814 he was admitted into the Dresden chapel as an oboist, since there were no violoncello vacancies. In the same year Carl Maria von Weber appointed Kummer as a violoncellist at the Royal Opera House.[2]

Little is known of Marpurg's early life. According to various sources, he studied "philosophy" and music. It is clear that he enjoyed a strong education and was friendly with various leading figures of the Enlightenment, including Winckelmann and Lessing. In 1746, he travelled to Paris as the secretary for a General named either Rothenberg or Bodenberg. There, he became acquainted with important intellectual luminaries, such as the writer and philosopher Voltaire, the mathematician d'Alembert and the composer Jean-Philippe Rameau.
