Adriaan "Adje" Paulen: was a Dutch athlete who competed from 1917 to 1931. During World War II, he was part of the Dutch resistance in the Netherlands. Following World War II, Paulen became a sports official, becoming president of the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF — International Association of Athletics Federations since 2001), serving fom 1976 to 1981.Competing in three Summer Olympics, Paulen earned his best finish of seventh in the 800 m event at Antwerp in 1920.[1][2] In 1925, he became first of over forty world record breakers (up to his 1985 death) in athletics at Bislett stadion in Oslo, setting a record in 500 m, then an official distance[3] Besides competing at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam, Paulen was also a member of the Organizing Committee.[

Adriaan Van Maanen: was a Dutch-American astronomer.Van Maanen, born into a well-to-do family in Friesland, studied astronomy at the University of Utrecht (earning his Ph.D. in 1911) and worked briefly at the University of Groningen. In 1911, he came to the United States to work as a volunteer in an unpaid capacity at Yerkes Observatory. Within a year he got a position at the Mount Wilson Observatory, where he remained active until his death in 1946.He is well known for his astrometric measurements of internal motions in spiral nebulae. Being of the belief that nebulae were local, stellar and gaseous systems that existed in our galaxy, his measurements came to be at odds with Edwin Hubble's discovery that the Andromeda Nebula and other spiral nebulae were extragalactic objects. The speed at which he calculated the nebulae to rotate would have had the Cepheid stars

Adriaan Kortlandt: a Dutch ethologist.He is famous for his work on displacement activities (Dutch: overspronggedraging) [1] and the hierarchy of instincts. Already in the thirties he realised the common characteristics between instincts in humans and other animals. In one of his experiments in Western Africa he exposed a stuffed panther with an electronic moving head to chimpanzees, who attacked it with sticks, thus illustrating to which extent early man could have kept wild animals at bay even before spears and other weapons were invented.

Adriaan Van Royen: was a Dutch botanist. He was a professor at Leiden and is associated with Carl Linneaus. [1Van Royen trained at the University of Leiden and graduated as a medical doctor in 1728 for his thesis Dissertatio botanico-medica de anatome et œconomia plantarum. He was later appointed professor of botany at the university from 1732-1755 and later professor of medicine (1755-1775).He is best known for his work on flora of Southeast Asia. He was a colleague of George Clifford, a wealthy English merchant and governor of the Dutch East India Company living in Harlem, and a noted source of new introductions from the East Indies and the Cape. Adriaan van Royen formed a close relationship with Linnaeus, who had visited the Leiden Botanic Garden during a stay in Leiden between 1737 and 1738.
