William Frederick Longstaff            Origin/Culture/Country: Australian

William Frederick Longstaff: was an Australian painter and war artist best known for his works commemorating those who died in the First World War.Upon returning to Australia, Longstaff continued to paint and teach art. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force at the outbreak of the First World War and was injured in the Gallipoli campaign. In October 1915 he joined a remount unit and served in France and Egypt before being evacuated to England in 1917. In England, he began drawing again and was trained in the art of camouflage. During his time in Egypt, Longstaff had made images of the Anzac Mounted Division and the other units. Upon his appointment as an Official War Artist in 1918 he produced numerous works during the final campaigns of the Western Front.

William Beckwith McInnes            Origin/Culture/Country: Australian

William Beckwith McInnes: was a famous Australian portrait painter, winner of the Archibald Prize seven times for his traditional style paintings.Soon afterwards McInnes held a successful show of his paintings at the Athenaeum gallery in conjunction with F. R. Crozier, which was followed in 1911 by a journey to Europe, where he did much landscape painting and made acquaintance with the masterpieces of Rembrandt, Velasquez and Raeburn.McInnes was represented in London at the exhibition of the Royal Institute of Painters in oils in 1913, and returned to Melbourne in the same year. A one man show was held at the Athenaeum gallery and nearly everything was sold. In 1916 he acted as locum tenens for Frederick McCubbin, master of the school of drawing at the national gallery, Melbourne, during his six months' leave of absence, and after his death was temporarily appointed to the position in 1918. In 1920 he was permanently appointed. In 1921 he won the first of his Archibald Prizes for portraiture.

William Edwin Pidgeon: Australian painter who won the Archibald Prize three times.Pidgeon began his drawing career by doing comic illustrations for his Technical High School magazine; at 16 years of age he began a newspaper artist cadetship at The Sunday Times. He studied for a period of 6 months under J. S. Watkins.Pidgeon won the Archibald Prize in 1958 with a portrait of journalist Ray Walker, in 1961 with a portrait of Rabbi Dr I Porush and again in 1968 with a portrait of fellow artist and friend, Dr Lloyd Rees. He also won the Melbourne Cup of Australian Art.William Pidgeon also painted a self portrait which was named 'Artists by Artist' by the NSW Art Gallery

William Charles Piguenit: was an Australian landscape painter.During this period of employment Piguenit provided lithographic illustrations for, The Salmon Ponds and vicinity, New Norfolk Tasmania (Hobart Town: M.L. Henn, [1867])He took painting lessons from the Scottish painter Frank Dunnett but until he got a good price for a painting from Sir James Agnew he had little success as a painter.Piguenit left the public service in 1873 to devote his time more fully to painting and his oils and watercolours of Tasmanian landscapes soon brought favourable reviews.

William Robinson: an award-winning Australian painter and lithographer.Robinson studied art at the Central Technical College from 1955 to 1956. After graduating, he began working as an art instructor, eventually becoming head of the Painting Department at the Brisbane College of Advanced Education in 1982. In 1989 he retired to work full-time on his paintings.The Metropolitan Museum of Art has several of his works in their collection, as does the National Gallery of Australia and several smaller Australian galleries.He has won the Archibald Prize for portraiture twice: first in 1987 for Equestrian self portrait, then in 1995 for Self-portrait with stunned mullet. He has also won the Wynne Prize for landscape painting in 1990 (The rainforest) and 1996 (Creation landscape – earth and sea).
