Paule Marshall: is an American author. She was born Valenza Pauline Burke in Brooklyn to Barbadian parents and educated at Brooklyn College (1953) and Hunter College (1955). Early in her career, she wrote poetry, but later returned to prose. She was chosen by Langston Hughes to accompany him on a world tour in which they both read their work, which was a boon for her career.

Paule Maurice studied music at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris. Her tutors included Jean Gallon (Harmony), Noël Gallon (Counterpoint and Fugue) and Henri Büsser (Composition). By the age of twenty-three, she was Jean Gallon's teaching assistant. She tutored many students, several of whom became professors to the school. With Pierre Lantier, her husband, she wrote a treatise on harmony which became an important reference work in numerous schools in France and abroad.
