Beals was an unknown actress when Flashdance came out, and throughout the movie there were a lot of close up shots of what was implied to be Beals' body. However, because Marine Jahan's role was not listed on the movie's opening or ending credits, and because the movie was a huge hit by the time the truth had come out, some felt deceived to find out it was neither Beals' body nor her dancing.

She received a diploma from the Institut d'Etudes Politiques in Paris when she was 20 years old, but then decided to pursue a career in art. In 1995, she started a course of studies at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee, Scotland, UK. Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris (Ensb-a). From there, she obtained a diploma in 2001. Starting 2004, she had her own exhibitions.
