Liu Bingjian: is a Chinese film director who emerged on the cinema scene in the late 1990s with his LGBT-themed film Men and Women.Originally trained as a painter, Liu attended the prestigious Beijing Film Academy where he studied cinematography.[1] Upon graduation, he switched to directing and worked in television before making his first film Inkstone which failed to be screened either in China or abroad.In 1999, he directed the underground LGBT film Men and Women. Though the film was banned in China, it was seen as a rare example of a Chinese film to treat homosexuality as an everyday occurrence.[2]

Liu Fendou: is a Chinese screenwriter, film director, and film producer.Upon his return to China, Liu entered into the film world, and soon became a major figure in China's independent film scene. Beginning his career as a screenwriter collaborating with Zhang Yang in his films Spicy Love Soup, and Shower, and Shi Runjiu in Beautiful New World, Liu eventually moved on to founding his own independent production company, Electric Orange Entertainment, which helped finance and produce Zhang Yibai's debut film Spring Subway.[1]

Liu Hao: is a Chinese filmmaker who has gained success in the early to mid 2000s.After graduating, Liu started his career with the independent film, Chen Mo and Meiting (2002). The film, about a romance between flower-vendor boy and a massage parlor girl, was never released in China.[2] It nevertheless was screened abroad, and won a special mention at the Berlin International Film Festival[3] and a NETPAC award.Though never released in China, the film caught the attention of Chinese producers at the China Film Group (CFG), who selected Liu to participate in the New Film Project, a joint investment by the CFG and the Peking University Kwans Group to fund new directors.[2] With expectations that the film would be not only critically, but more importantly commercially successful, the China Film Group and the Peking University Kwans Group invested ¥5 million to Liu for his project, Two Great Sheep, a rural comedy about a poor peasant couple being forced to take care of two sheep of a superior breed.[2]

Liu Miaomiao: is a female Chinese film director. Liu, an ethnic Hui Muslim, was the youngest member of the 1982 class of the Beijing Film Academy, commonly referred to as the Fifth Generation.[1] Her career has spanned both film and television, though she remains less well known than many of her male counterparts to international audiences.Liu graduated form the BFA's directing program, in which she enrolled at the age of sixteen,[2] along with directors such as Tian Zhuangzhuang and Chen Kaige. Upon graduation, she was assigned to the Xiaoxing Film Studio where she directed her first solo work, Stories of the Voyage in 1985 at the age of 23.[1]

Her paintings and prints often make use of anonymous Chinese historical photographs, particularly those of women, refugees, and soldiers as subject matter. Liu's paintings - often large, drippy, and washed with layers of linseed oil - can be seen as critiques of the rigid academicism of the Chinese Socialist Realist style in which she was trained. The two overriding emotional trajectories of her career trace the parallel but also oppositional experiences of always leaving the homeland (China) while never quite arriving home (the U.S.). Her works represent the ongoing tension between emigration and immigration. Liu has received numerous awards, including two painting fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, and her work is represented in the permanent collections of major museums and private collections throughout the United States and Asia.
