In 1997 Yu received a Bachelor of Arts degree, and in 2000 earned a Master of Arts degree. In January 2012, after a year of house arrest and harassment in China, he emigrated to the United States.

After making his debut he would used be sparingly and would only start to become a consistent regular during the 2007 league season when he had a personally impressive showing when he scored six goals in nineteen league appearances. Now a regular within the side Ding Jie would unfortunately be part of the squad that saw the club relegated to the second tier at the end of the 2008 league season.
