Bruno Lawrence: a New Zealand musician and actor, born David Charles Lawrence in Worthing, West Sussex, England. His family migrated to New Zealand in 1946, settling in New Plymouth before moving to Wellington in 1948. He spent most of his life in New Zealand and also worked extensively in Australia. Bruno was a renowned jazz drummer, playing drums in many bands, including Blerta, and The Crocodiles. He also acted in many movies, including Goodbye Pork Pie (1981), Smash Palace (1981), The Quiet Earth (1985) , at the time the highest-grossing New Zealand film, and Bridge to Nowhere (1986).

In 1943, he asked Rolf Wideröe to cooperate with him in building a betatron. When Touschek was arrested by the Gestapo in 1945, Wideroë visited him in prison, and during these meetings they continued to talk about the betatron.
