Antoine Augustin Cournot: was a French economist, philosopher and mathematician.Augustin Cournot was born in the small town of Gray (Haute-Saône). He was educated in the schools of Gray until he was fifteen. Subsequently, for the next four years, he worked haphazardly as a clerk in a lawyer's office. Cournot directed his own studies throughout this time, mostly centered around philosophy and law. Inspired by the work of Laplace, Cournot realised that he had to learn mathematics if he was to pursue his philosophical aspirations. So, at the age of nineteen, he enrolled in a mathematical preparatory course at a school in Besançon. He subsequently won entry into the École Normale Supérieure in Paris in 1821.

He won the 1903 Nobel Prize in Physics for discovering radioactivity.In 1892, he became the third in his family to occupy the physics chair at the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle. In 1894, he became chief engineer in the Department of Bridges and Highways.In 1896, while investigating phosphorescence in uranium salts, Becquerel accidentally discovered radioactivity. Investigating the work of Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, Becquerel wrapped a fluorescent substance, potassium uranyl sulfate, in photographic plates and black material in preparation for an experiment requiring bright sunlight. However, prior to actually performing the experiment, Becquerel found that the photographic plates were fully exposed. This discovery led Becquerel to investigate the spontaneous emission of nuclear radiation.

Paul Gabriel Antoine: was a French Jesuit theologian. Antoine was born at Lunéville. At the age of fifteen he applied for admission into the Society of Jesus, and was received 9 October 1693. On the completion of his studies, he taught humanities for several years, first in Pont-à-Mousson, and then in Colmar. Returning to the former town, he occupied the chair of philosophy, and later that of theology, the first edition of his Dogmatic Theology appearing in 1723, and three years later his Moral Theology in three volumes. Afterwards he was rector of the College of Pont-à-Mousson, where he died in his sixty-fifth year.

Guillaume François Antoine: was a French mathematician. His name is firmly associated with l'Hôpital's rule for calculating limits involving indeterminate forms 0/0 and 8/8. Although the rule did not originate with l'Hôpital, it appeared in print for the first time in his treatise on the infinitesimal calculus, entitled Analyse des Infiniment Petits pour l'Intelligence des Lignes Courbes.[2] This book was a first systematic exposition of differential calculus. Several editions and translations to other languages were published and it became a model for subsequent treatments of calculus.
