His father (Ezekiah Jackson Craddock) also volunteered to serve in the U.S. Coast Guard and patrolled American coastal waters to protect Allied shipping against German U-boats during World War II. His mother (Mary Louise) maintained a general store at Munden Point. However, Craddock's parents moved the family and opened a new general store and sailor's tailoring shop in downtown Norfolk, Virginia. Having spent his youth in the Norfolk, Virginia area, Vincent Eugene Craddock decided to pursue the freewheeling life of a sailor.
