Joseph Rankin: was a U.S. Representative from Wisconsin.He served as member of the Wisconsin State Assembly in 1860. During the Civil War Rankin enlisted in the Union Army in 1862 and was chosen captain of Company D, Twenty-sixth Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry.

Darrell T. Rankin: is a Canadian peace activist and communist politician. He was briefly the leader of the Communist Party of Canada - Ontario (CPC-O) in 1995, and has led the Communist Party of Canada - Manitoba (CPC-M) since 1996. His partner, Cheryl-Anne Carr, is also active with the Communist Party. Rankin moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1995, after the Ontario election. The Communist Party of Canada - Manitoba had been without effective leadership for several years, and Rankin was chosen as the party's provincial organizer before the year was over. He coordinated the CPC-M's 75th anniversary banquet in early 1996, and was elected party leader later in the year. He has led the party in the 1999, 2003 and 2007 provincial elections.

James Palmer Rankin            Origin/Culture/Country: American

James Palmer Rankin: was a physician and political figure in Ontario, Canada. He represented Perth North in the Canadian House of Commons from 1908 to 1911 and from 1921 to 1925 as a Liberal. Rankin then sat for Perth North division in the Senate of Canada from 1925 to 1934. He served as a lieutenant-colonel in the Canadian Army Medical Corps during World War I. Rankin was defeated by Hugh Boulton Morphy when he ran for reelection to the House of Commons in 1911 and 1917, then defeated Morphy in the 1921 federal election. He died in office in Stratford at the age of 79.

Alexander Rankin: was a Scottish-born merchant and political figure in New Brunswick. He represented Northumberland County in the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick from 1827 to 1852. In elections in 1837 and 1843, Rankin supported John Ambrose Street against candidates supported by Cunard. Gilmour retired from the business in 1842, selling his interest to Rankin. Rankin was named to the province's Executive Council in 1847. With Cunard, he was a commissioner for lights in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and served on the board of health for the region. For many years, he also served as justice of the peace.

Harry Rankin: was a Vancouver lawyer and long term member of the Vancouver City Council.Communists were banned from joining the bar and the Law Society of BC interviewed Rankin at length prior to admitting him to the bar about his views on God, whether he would defend his country if attacked, and whether he was a member of the Communist Party of Canada, then called the Labour Progessive Party, something he was able to deny as the Communist University Club was an independent and unaffiliated organization.
