Morris Swadesh: was an American linguist. He was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts to Russian Jewish parents from whom he learned Yiddish. He received his B.A. from the University of Chicago and his Ph.D. from Yale University, where he studied with Edward Sapir. During the Second World War he worked on military projects to compile reference materials for Burmese, Chinese, Russian, and Spanish. In May 1949 Swadesh was fired by the City College of New York as the result of accusations that he was a Communist, making him one of a number of anthropologists to fall victim to harassment by anti-communists during the McCarthy Era. He continued to work in the United States with limited funding from the American Philosophical Society until 1954 when he took a position as Professor at the National School of Anthropology and History (Escuela Nacional de Antropología e Historia) in Mexico City, where he remained until his death.

James Morris: was a businessman, banker and political figure in Canada West.In 1836, he began working at a bank in Brockville. In 1838, he was appointed to a commission which administered funds raised for canal building. He was involved in the founding of Queen's College, later Queen's University, at Kingston. He represented Leeds County in the Legislative Assemblies of Upper Canada and the Province of Canada from 1837 to 1844. In that year, he was appointed to the Legislative Council. In 1851, he became the first Canadian Postmaster General, also serving on the Board of Railway Commissioners and representing the government on the board of the Grand Trunk Railway. He was speaker of the Legislative Council from 1853 to 1854 and in 1858. He served as receiver general from 1862 until 1863, when he suffered a debilitating stroke.

William Dowler Morris: was mayor of Ottawa, Canada in 1901. He was born in County Leitrim, Ireland in 1857 and came to Canada in 1877. He became involved in the oil, coal and real estate businesses; he also owned a brickyard. Morris was first elected to city council in 1892. He was forced to resign as mayor after being convicted of drinking after hours at an Ottawa hotel, an offence under the liquor license act. During his term as mayor, he was instrumental in persuading philanthropist Andrew Carnegie to donate funds for the main branch of the Ottawa Public Library; the city made a commitment to allocate funds for the ongoing upkeep of the library. However, the mayor of the time, James A. Ellis, chose not to invite Morris to the 1906 opening. Morris also served as a transport officer in World War I at the age of 60.
