He was born in Griggsville, Illinois.A 6'8" forward/center from Kansas State University, Hitch played six seasons (1951-1957) in the National Basketball Association as a member of the Minneapolis Lakers, Milwaukee Hawks, and Philadelphia Warriors. He averaged 5.0 points per game in his career and won two championships with the Lakers.

He also won a Christopher Award for this book. Lewis Frederick Urry,: was a Canadian chemical engineer and inventor. He invented both the alkaline battery and lithium battery while working for the Eveready Battery company.Throughout the 1950s many engineers had experimented with alkaline batteries but nobody had been able to develop a longer running battery which was worth the higher cost of production. Urry, after testing a number of materials, discovered that manganese dioxide and solid zinc worked well coupled with an alkaline substance as an electrolyte. His main problem was that the battery could not provide enough power. Urry managed to overcome this problem by using powdered zinc.

Reggie Lewis: was an American basketball player for the NBA's Boston Celtics from 1987 to 1993. His #35 jersey was retired by the Celtics as a memorial to him -- one of only two Celtics to have a retired number but not a championship in the 62-year history of the franchise.
