From 1927 through 1929, Keith's stepmother was Peg Entwistle, the failed actress who committed suicide by jumping from the "H" in the famous Hollywood sign. After high school in East Rockaway, New York he joined the U.S. Marines (1942-1945). He served during World War II as an air gunner and received an Air Medal.
