Karl Guthe Jansky: was an American physicist and radio engineer who in August 1931 first discovered radio waves emanating from the Milky Way. He is considered one of the founding figures of radio astronomy.Karl Jansky attended college at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he received his BS in physics in 1927. In 1928 he joined the Bell Telephone Laboratories site in Holmdel, New Jersey. Bell Labs wanted to investigate atmospheric and ionospheric properties using "short waves" (wavelengths of about 10-20 meters) for use in transatlantic radio telephone service. As a radio engineer, Jansky was assigned the job of investigating sources of static that might interfere with radio voice transmissions.

Karl Patterson Schmidt: was an American herpetologist.In 1913 Schmidt entered Cornell University to study biology and geology. In 1915 he discovered his preference for herpetology during a four month training course at the Perdee Oil Company in Louisiana.[3] In 1916 he was admitted to the the degree of Bachelor of Arts and made his first geological expedition to Santo Domingo. From 1916 to 1922 he worked as scientific assistant in herpetology at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, under the well-known American herpetologists Mary Cynthia Dickerson and Gladwyn K. Noble. In 1919 he made his first collecting expedition to Puerto Rico. In 1922 he became the assistant curator of reptiles and amphibians at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. From 1923 to 1934 he made several collecting expeditions for that museum to Central and South America

Karl Sax: was an American botanist and geneticist, in particular he was noted for his research in cytogenetics and the effect of radiation on chromosomes.Sax was born in Spokane, Washington, his parents were pioneer farmers, and active in civic affairs, his father was mayor of Colville, Washington. He was schooled in Colville and went on to study at Washington State College in 1912. He majored in agriculture, his decision to undertake graduate study was influenced by plant breeder Edward Gaines. At college he also met and married Dr. Hally Jolivette, his cytology teacher; they had three sons. In 1916 following his graduation, his wife accepted a position at Wellesley College and he went with her to the East Coast enrolling in the doctoral program at Harvard's Bussey Institution Graduate School of Applied Biology. He completed his MA in 1917 and served as a Private in the US Army in 1917 - 1918.

Karl Zerbe: was a German-born American painter.The works of Karl Zerbe are significant because they record "the response of a distinguished artist of basically European sensibility to the physical and cultural scene of the New World"[1]Germany where they lived until 1920. Karl Zerbe studied chemistry in 1920 at the Technische Hochschule, Friedberg. From 1921-1923 he lived in Munich, where he studied painting at the Debschitz School, mainly under Josef Eberz. From 1924-1926 Karl Zerbe worked and traveled in Italy on a fellowship from the City of Munich. In 1932 his oil painting titled: ‘’Herbstgarten’’ (autumnal garden), of 1929, was acquired by the National-Galerie, Berlin; in 1937, the painting was destroyed by the Nazis as "degenerative art." From 1937- 1955 Karl Zerbe was the head of the Department of Painting, School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. In 1939 Karl Zerbe became a U.S. citizen and the same year for the first time he used encaustic.

His father, Elias Compton, was from an old American Presbyterian family, and his mother, Otelia Augspurger Compton, was from an Alsatian and Hessian Mennonite family that had recently immigrated to the United States. He came from a remarkably accomplished family in which his brother Arthur became a prominent physicist and sister Mary a missionary.
