Alpheus Hyatt: was an American zoologist and palaeontologist.He fought in the US Civil War, reaching the rank of Captain. Studied under Louis Agassiz. A proponent of Neo-Lamarckism with Edward Drinker Cope. He edited American Naturalist between 1867 and 1870. Professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology 1870-1888. He established a laboratory for the study of Marine Biology in Annisquam, Massachusetts. The River Road building gave him access to the Annisquam River, a salt water estuary. This enterprise was moved to Woods Hole and became the Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory. Hyatt was the father of famed sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington. His other children were his daughter Harriet Randolph Hyatt Mayor, who was also a sculptor though less well known, and his son Alpheus Hyatt III.

Hyatt, a Perkin Medal recipient, is an inductee into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.and began working as a printer when he was 16. Later, he became an inventor, receiving several hundred patents. While researching a substitute for ivory to produce billiard balls, he experimented with Parkesine, a material first created by Alexander Parkes. The result was a commercially viable way of producing Celluloid which he patented in the USA in 1869. Hyatt formed the Celluloid Manufacturing Company (originally the Albany Dental Plate Company) in 1870.
