He was a 6'3½" (192 cm) 190 lb (86 kg) guard and played collegiately at the University of North Carolina.Elston was selected with the 7th pick of the third round in the 1974 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks. He was also selected in the fourth round of the 1974 ABA Draft by the Carolina Cougars. He played for the Virginia Squires in 1974-75, playing 72 games and averaging 8.3 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game. On August 18, 1976, the former ABA's Indiana Pacers signed Elston in their first move since their absorption into the NBA.[1] In 1976-77, Elston played 5 games for the Pacers, averaging 1.0 point, 1.2 rebounds and 0.4 assists per game.

Murray John Elston: is an executive and former Canadian politician. He was a Liberal member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1981 to 1994, and was a prominent cabinet minister in the government of David Peterson. He briefly served as interim leader of the Liberal Party from July to November 1991. Elston was first elected to the Ontario legislature in the 1981 provincial election, defeating Progressive Conservative Gary Harron by 224 votes in the rural, southwestern constituency of Huron—Bruce. The Progressive Conservatives won a majority government under Bill Davis in this election, and Elston sat on the opposition benches for the next four years. In the 1990 Ontario election, the Liberals were unexpectedly defeated by the New Democratic Party under Bob Rae. Many high-profile Liberals lost their seats, though Elston was returned in Bruce by a comfortable if reduced margin. Peterson, who had lost his own seat on election night, resigned immediately as party leader.
